Giving Back and Going Sustainable with Project Linus

POSTED UNDER Social Responsibility

When Lesley Bender, Senior Marketing Manager, Millennial, Kids and Ideology, noticed the quantity of unused product samples being discarded at Private Brands, she researched some new ways to recycle these textiles. That’s how she found Project Linus.

The nonprofit organization – named for the famed Peanuts character and his trustworthy blanket – is dedicated to “providing security through [homemade] blankets,” for ill or traumatized children and teens. Blankets and materials are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug.

Private Brands initially became involved with Project Linus approximately five years ago. Since then, it has expanded to monthly drop-offs for fabric and product samples. According to Bender, the New York City chapter became so inundated with Macy’s samples that she had to expand donations throughout the Northeast, sending samples everywhere from Maryland to Maine.

“It’s extremely rewarding when we receive letters from the children. These blankets become support systems for them during a time of need, and they’re so thankful that someone would take the time to make something special for them,” said Bender. She looks forward to seeing Bloomingdale’s and other business functions get involved so that they can partner with the organization in an even bigger way. “We’ve only scratched the surface with Project Linus.”
