Macy’s Store Fixture Recycling Initiative

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

Did you know that we have a program to reuse and recycle store fixtures at Macy’s? As stores receive new fixtures, the old pieces are taken to a central location where they are evaluated to be reused at other stores or broken down and recycled. Examples of these fixtures include: showcases, chrome pieces, tables, vendor shop fixtures, store equipment, etc.

The first phase is all about reuse. The fixtures are either redeployed for renovation projects or reused in stores that need the fixtures. If the fixture is in good shape and can be reused, there’s most likely a store that wants it. In 2014 we:

  • Redeployed 8,890 fixtures from storage
  • Downstreamed 8,160 fixtures from one store to another
  • Which adds up to over 17,000 total fixtures reused

Fixtures are also reused through third-party donations for several projects. Macy’s worked to donate used fixtures and re-merchandise a courthouse clothing center that provides apparel to wear to court or for job interviews. On another project, one Macy's executive – a veteran with two sons in the military – worked with a veterans’ museum in our Northeast Region to donate used fixtures for displaying military memorabilia. This fixture recycling program is seeing more opportunities for third-party donation as the concept begins to resonate across distribution centers.

For fixtures that are past the point of salvage, they’re taken apart and the metal is properly recycled, significantly reducing what goes to the landfill. This process also spares the company from waste transportation and disposal expenses.

When we call this is a process, that’s because it is; this recycling effort takes a lot of work. There are six pre-crushers strategically placed in different warehouses across the country that have the capability to break apart these fixtures. This program is categorized by region, and each region must have a partnership with every store to be effective. It takes about 17,000 pounds of material before a container can be processed, so the supply has to meet the demand.

Annually, 300,000 lbs of metal, or approximately 6,300 pieces of fixtures are recycled. About three times the amount of fixtures go into crushers to be recycled compared to what’s taken to the landfill. And this is just dealing with metal. The teams are currently testing glass recycling for future use in this initiative.

The team behind this keeps the idea and mentality of sustainability in action top-of-mind – the value that is Green Living. They maximize the impact of reducing Macy’s waste to landfill while also reducing the company’s waste disposal expenses.
