Did You Know? Macy’s Recycles!

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

With about 775 Macy’s stores from coast-to-coast, we try our hardest to make sure our recycling efforts are as impactful as possible and consistent across the board. So … what do we recycle in our stores? In just the first half of 2015, we’ve recycled more than 44,000 tons of materials.

This translates to almost 260,000 trees saved, 242,000 cubic yards of diverted waste that would otherwise go into the landfill, and enough conserved power to fulfill the annual electricity needs of more than 20,500 homes!

These items, including ...

  • Cardboard
  • Plastic Film Shrink-Wrap
  • White Paper
  • Plastic Hangers
  • Scrap Metals
  • Wood Pallets
  • Glass
  • Fixtures

... are collected in stores and sent to our distribution centers across America where they’re aggregated in large bales and sold to our recycling vendor partners.

As we reported earlier, we also reuse and recycle our store fixtures when we can, including showcases, chrome pieces, tables, vendor shop fixtures, store equipment, etc.

Additionally, the black hangers that we use in our stores are made from recycled resins. It only makes good business sense that we reuse them and recycle them at the end of life.

Recycling has become every associate’s responsibility in stores as well as the corporate offices and support areas. Recycling is not solely a business decision but a step toward cultural change. We’ve made great strides in streamlining recycling, but we know improvements can be made to be more consistent across our 775 stores. If you have questions about how to recycle in your store, contact your Store Operations Manager for more details.
