Blueprints Go Green at Macy’s, Reducing Paper Use and Expanding Sustainability

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

Blueprints are essential to the Construction team, and also to the expansion and evolution of Macy’s stores, showing where changes and additions will be made to update a department, a floor or even an entire store. However, these rolls of blueprints also waste a lot of paper and ink.

Due to the commitment and dedication to sustainability in the SPACE Department (store planning, architecture, construction and engineering), these rolls of paper have been replaced by PDF files so that associates can look at project dimensions on-screen rather than with paper printouts.

Besides being much more sustainable by cutting out huge printing jobs, this switch has several benefits to the team:

  • It allows one to zoom in and out to identify areas to estimate costs
  • It’s clearer than deciphering handwriting
  • It’s faster than using paper
  • Communication to others that need to see the plans is faster with the electronic version
  • Changes are easier to make
  • Printing only needs to occur when everything is final

With the increasing use of tablets in construction, more people can view plans without using paper, and that includes consultants and vendors in addition to Macy’s associates. Construction is also using paperless square footage reports, out-to-bid drawings and electronic environmental reports which are archived online instead of as paper files.

Hard hats off to Construction for reducing the use of paper in their operations.
