Macy’s Private Brands Find Ingenuity in Sustainability, Furthers Green Goals

POSTED UNDER In the Details

The results of our sustainability challenge can be seen in every building, department and office at Macy’s. Green Living has featured stories focusing on solar energy, paper conservation, recycling pallets, measuring transportation fuel and much more.  Now Macy’s Private Brands gets into the act.

The new Ecolution System for cleaning is helping Private Brands save money on national brands while reducing shipping charges, the accumulation of cardboard boxes and greenhouse emissions from trucks. The Ecolution System is certified by the EPA, the Canadian EcoLogo and Green Seal.

Here’s how it works - Ecolution comes in a concentrated form that mixes with water in clear plastic cleaning bottles. One gallon of the Ecolution fluid makes 50 gallons of diluted cleaner. This saves about 50 plastic bottles for each gallon of Ecolution used.

When compared to national brands that cost between two dollars and six dollars per quart, the cost savings are amazing:

  • One quart of Ecolution all-purpose cleaner is 6 cents
  • One quart of Ecolution glass cleaner is 34 cents
  • One quart of Ecolution Cleaner Degreaser is 16 cents

Private Brands has also found new sustainable ways to label and tag their merchandise. Woven labels made from 60 percent recycled polyester have been implemented for select brands like Tasso Elba, Alfani and Charter Club. By using this type of label, Macy’s can reduce use of fossil fuels as well as petroleum and carbon dioxide emissions.

Additionally, nearly 90 percent of the integrated graphic price tags used by Private Brands are printed on Forest Stewardship Council*-certified paper. Nearly 135 million price tags for Private Brands are used per year. The hangtags produced for Private Brands also use Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper, and the FSC logo is on all Private Brands hangtags.

From cleaning products to clothes tags, additional opportunities for sustainability are being explored by Private Brands and its vendors every day!

*Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization that sets certain high standards to make sure that forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible and socially beneficial manner.
