Macy’s Celebrates Third Annual Earth Week with Sustainability and Conservation in Action

POSTED UNDER In Our Community

Spring is the time for new beginnings: flowers in bloom, warmer temperatures and a celebration of our sustainability accomplishments during the week when the world observes Earth Day – April 22.  For Earth Week 2014, we gave our Green Living website a fresh look and more intuitive feel, making it more accessible to mobile device users. The site now includes more interactive features, including:

  • A new audio message from Terry Lundgren that includes new sustainability achievements
  • A solar dashboard showing how much energy our 55 solar installations are producing within 24 hours
  • Stories, hints and the headquarters for a new store initiative named Green Grade

Our updated website isn’t the only change. Green Living no longer solely refers to our sustainability website. It has become the umbrella term for all our sustainability initiatives at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

In April 2014, Macy’s Benefits launched “It’s Easy to Go Green,” a new paperless approach to keeping associates current with benefit materials.  From extra associate discount events, annual enrollment reminders and legally-required benefit plan materials, our associates can receive it all in their inbox.  Associates will no longer have to receive CDs for annual enrollment. This translates to paper and trees being saved, with less waste ending up in landfills. Cheers to Macy’s Benefits for choosing an environmentally friendly strategy to inform associates about very important benefits.

Earth Week is a time for everyone to appreciate our planet and everything it gives us. But every week should be Earth Week. Each and every day Macy’s works to consistently cut our carbon footprint and have less of an impact on the environment through sustainability initiatives, big and small. Have you gone green? Earth Day is the perfect time to start – but so is today.

Associates across the country were busy during Earth Week showing their green spirit:

  • At our distribution centers, associates cleaned up facility grounds and parks in their communities and planted eco-friendly plants
  • Some Macy’s Logistics and Operations associates had the opportunity to visit the Eco Fest at the University of Florida’s College of Sustainability
  • The Go Green Employee Resource Group in the Downtown Cincinnati Central Offices, Macy’s Credit and Customer Services Mason and Media Center registered volunteers for community electronics recycling
  • Cincinnati Central Offices Downtown conducted an office supply swap; recycled books, CDs, DVDs; and recycled umbrellas to benefit dahlia growing
  • Cincinnati Central Offices at Kemper Road measured copier clicks, performed community outreach and recycled books, CDs and DVDs
  • Tempe Macy’s Credit and Customer Services cleaned up the grounds of Tovrea Castle by weeding, removing dead or old plants and planting new cacti
  • In New York City, Partners in Time cleaned up Roosevelt Park
  • Macy’s Systems and Technology in Johns Creek, GA, introduced the new print release pilot to save paper
  • St. Louis Macy’s Credit and Customer Services Go Green Employee Resource Group cleaned up water streams
