How to Start a Go Green ERG

POSTED UNDER Go Green Employee Resource Groups

Green Living has covered several Go Green Employee Resource Group (ERG) events throughout the years to spotlight associates coming together to make a sustainable difference. Now we want to give some context to our Go Green ERGs – as well as a guide on how to streamline the process. We want to ensure associates have the tools to start their own ERG in order to make a meaningful impact.

What is an ERG? They are associate-run and associate-managed peer groups of like-minded individuals that help influence the culture in the workplace. The Go Green ERG is a passionate group of associates that help educate and create awareness around topics of sustainability.

Just to give you an idea of the types of events and impact our Go Green ERGs can produce, here’s a list of past accomplishments:

Creating Infrastructure Change

  • Create a composting program
  • Create an Eco-Center for employees to recycle common waste streams (rechargeable batteries, eye glasses, plastic bags, cell phones)

Creating Awareness through Lunch and Learns

  • Air Quality – Where does air pollution come from? What can you do to help?
  • Composting 101
  • Learn about Community Gardens and local CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)
  • Macy’s Market Days – Encourage associates to “buy local”

Recycling Events

  • Share the Warmth – Recycling gently used outerwear and donating it to a local school in need
  • Athletic Shoes – In partnership with the Nike Grind project, athletic shoes were ground for athletic playing fields and playground mulch
  • Christmas Lights

Volunteer Events

As you can see, the current Go Green ERGs have made quite an impact, but it’s time to get more associates involved in making a green difference. Learn how you can start a Go Green ERG of your own in our How to Start a Go Green ERG Guide (available to Macy's, Inc. associates only through My Macy's Portal).
