Stores Upgrade to LED Lighting in a BIG Way

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

One of the major sustainability initiatives Macy’s has taken on as a company involves reducing energy consumption through our lighting. When you think about it, Macy’s – with stores across the country – has a lot of lighting. With every new building project, LED lighting has certainly been considered and utilized. But what about our existing buildings? Well … our Facilities Management and Energy Services teams have been hard at work on retrofitting these stores with LED lighting too!

The most recent project was ambitious. The goal was to retrofit the lighting in more than 200 stores with LED lights – that’s more than 250,000 LED tubes!

The team strategically targeted states with higher utility rates – 18 in total – with Hawaii being used as the pilot state for this ambitious project. Lighting was addressed in both the front-of-house sales floor as well as back-of-house. All of the old fluorescent tubes were recycled as well.

And the results are equally tremendous. With the conversion, we predict:

  • An annual savings of 16,000,000 KWH
  • An estimated $2.5 million expense savings annually

Not only this, but this major overhaul was completed in a month! Yes, this entire project was completed in January 2016. What could have been a logistical nightmare turned into a very well executed plan, with materials being produced at central locations then delivered to individual stores on an as needed basis. There were no shortages, and no LED retrofit was left behind!

Even though this project just wrapped up, we’re already seeing energy (and cost) savings! Our Facilities Management and Energy Services teams not only helped to reduce our carbon footprint, they also reduced our energy bill.

What’s next? The goal is to convert everything to full LED eventually. Hats off to our Facilities Management and Energy Services teams for what is almost an unbelievable Green Living story. We’re very happy to report it, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on future installations!
