Shining Bright in Solar: 10 Years of Success

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

A decade-long partnership between Macy’s, Inc. and SunPower Corporation has resulted in 71 of Macy’s, Inc.s 78 planned or installed solar installations across seven states. During Earth Week, the two companies marked the alliance and its achievements with Earth Day celebrations at Macy’s stores in Sacramento, CA, and Bowie, MD.

Macy’s extraordinary commitment to solar power puts it in the top 10 of the 2015 U.S. Corporate Solar Champions, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Macy’s continues to shine brightly in solar energy, with an additional 17 solar installations planned for this year.

At year-end, Macy’s solar-powered stores combined will be generating more than 46,000 megawatts of clean energy each year – with excess energy sold to others. According to SunPower, the amount of power generated by their 71 systems at Macy’s facilities could power more than 15,000 electric vehicles for 30 years.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates the carbon dioxide emissions avoided each year as a result of these systems is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from more than 37 million pounds of coal or almost 4 million gallons of gasoline.

To celebrate these achievements, Macy’s held special dedication events for the new solar systems at the stores in downtown Sacramento, CA, and Bowie, MD. The celebrations included a comments and remarks from local officials, Macy’s leadership, and SunPower, culminating in the throwing of a ceremonial switch to start the panels.
