Macy's Logistics and Operations Get an Energy Efficient Makeover

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

Across the country, Macy’s distribution centers have been undergoing LED lighting retrofits, turning existing, older buildings into more energy efficient hubs. In 2013, Macy’s Logistics and Operations (MLO) partnered with Energy Services in a cross-functional endeavor to find the biggest bang for Macy’s buck when it came to which locations to retrofit. Finding where we have old technology as well as the highest energy bills became the focus.

From there, this retrofit project grew into a two-phased, two-year overhaul including:

  • Retrofitting 18 locations
  • Installing more than 62,000 LED fixtures
  • Saving more than 5 million kilowatts per year

The majority of these retrofits are being installed in interior offices. Aside from yielding much higher energy efficiency, these installations also increase security and improve office morale, with improved color rendering compared to fluorescent lighting.

Old T8 fluorescent lamps were replaced by tubular LEDs, reducing energy consumption by as much as 50 percent. Additionally, 2x2 office fixtures were replaced by a LED retrofit troffer. These lights have the added benefit of being easily installed by Macy’s engineers, minimizing overhead and maintenance – not to mention they should be maintenance-free for the next 7 to 10 years.

Any new technology used in Macy’s goes through thorough rigorous testing, including these LED installations. That being said, this technology has already made it into the major renovation of Macy’s flagship Herald Square store in New York City!

The cross-functional partnership of MLO and Energy Services has a primary mission: to continually identify the next step in our never-ending quest to reduce energy usage. When these two teams began collaborating, things started happening; they created synergy through working together toward this common goal.

Viable sustainable technology is also a factor in this retrofitting. As energy prices increase and technology costs decrease, conversions like these are becoming more readily accessible. Sustainable projects that weren’t plausible as recently as two years ago are starting to make sense for the company.

Congratulations to MLO and Energy Services on their partnership. Thanks for making our distribution centers a little bit brighter … and much more sustainable.
