Macy’s First Full-LED Retrofit Store

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

We’re happy to announce that our Macy’s store in Cherry Hill, NJ, has become the first Macy’s location to be fully retrofitted with LED lights! Facilities Management and Energy Services were looking for a store to entirely retrofit and several factors came together to make Cherry Hill the perfect candidate. LED lighting saves energy and greatly reduces maintenance, but it also comes with some hidden benefits.

The initial goal was to reduce energy consumption and this project hit the mark. “We touched every single light fixture in the store,” said Chris McAvinue, Regional Director/ Facilities Management. And he wasn’t kidding. Each fluorescent fixture retrofitted saved 50 percent or more on energy consumption. In total, the numbers are big. By retrofitting 2x2 fixtures and other linear fluorescent lights, this project will save more than 383,000 kilowatt hours annually!

The life expectancy of these lamps is 50,000 hours – or about 10 years. This life expectancy saves energy, minimizes maintenance and reduces the amount of fluorescent lamp waste.

Additionally, the store has become noticeably brighter, previously 18 foot candles to the current 30 foot candles (a unit measuring the brightness of light). The enhanced LED lighting scores an 86 out of 100 on the color rendering index – a measure of how accurately an artificial light source displays colors. This means the product looks better in the store and the shopper looks better in the dressing room. In fact, the store is already seeing an increase in sales since the retrofit.

There are plans to retrofit more stores, so stay tuned for new LED developments. And congratulations to our Facilities Management and Energy Services teams for lighting the way to this landmark achievement.
