Macy’s and the Power of Solar Energy

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

As non-renewable energy resources become increasingly scarce and energy prices continue to rise, the United States has responded with a call for more sustainable energy options. The option leading the pack is solar power, energy produced by the sun that’s captured and powered through solar panel installations. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, demand for U.S. solar power increased 30 percent in 2014 as residential installations surpassed 1 gigawatt for the first time.

Our environmental plan identifies five specific areas of focus. One of those areas is reducing our use of scarce resources. This plan is executed very simply - by consuming less electricity and sourcing more of our power from renewable resources. Long story short: solar energy.

We’ve invested heavily in solar energy – and green business is booming. Not only is this investment good for the environment, it’s also good for the bottom line. Macy’s has been recognized nationally for being one of the top five companies in the country for investing in solar energy. That accomplishment should make our competitors green with envy.

In 2012, we set a goal for our company to increase the number of solar installations by about 35 percent. At that time we had 44 active installations. Today? We have 74 active installations – an increase of 68 percent!

We are currently capable of producing over 46,000 megawatt-hours/year of clean energy from our stores and distribution centers – a number that continues to grow. This equates to:

  • Saving more than 75 million miles driven
  • Saving nearly 3.6 million gallons of gas
  • Powering 2,910 average American homes for one year

Solar energy is a sizable investment, but sustainability is a commitment that we take seriously, as new and exciting developments in solar energy are incorporated throughout our facilities more and more every day.
