Macy’s Creates Daylight in Its Fulfillment and Distribution Centers

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

Creating a better work environment for Macy’s associates in large, windowless structures, such as our distribution centers and fulfillment centers, is a priority. Not only does it cut down on energy costs with lighting and heat, more importantly it’s better for morale and health to get natural light exposure.

Our solatube lighting installation in the fulfillment center expansion in Goodyear, AZ, has gained attention in trade publications for creating daylight, achieving desired lighting levels, meeting energy savings goals, improving quality control, and creating a better work environment for employees. Complete expansion at the Goodyear center yields 350 solatube installations – that’s a lot of natural light.

What is solatube lighting, you ask? Great question. It’s a skylight system that uses a rooftop dome to capture natural sunlight bringing daylight into interior spaces.

“We have been using solatube daylighting systems for more than a decade and we continue to be impressed with the quality and performance. The amount of light delivered is truly incredible, allowing us the opportunity to turn off our electric lights during the day, and reduce our peak demand load. More importantly, the natural light creates a better work environment for our most important asset – our people,” said Kermit Ferrer, VP/Distribution Planning, Capital and Properties.

Alternatives like LED lighting and solatube installations are cutting down on harsh, depressing fluorescent lighting. This saves energy, yes, but it’s also a simple solution that improves the space aesthetically – and that’s something we should value more often.
