LED Revolution: High-Efficiency Lighting at Macy’s

POSTED UNDER Energy & Lighting

Macy's is entering a new phase of our industry-leading program to install energy-saving LED lighting. LED technology is being piloted in several existing stores that were previously using fluorescent lighting. Now we’re stepping it up. New stores and remodels will be using LED technology extensively.

The benefits of switching to LED lighting seem endless: they last longer, contain no mercury, require much less maintenance, increase energy efficiency and decrease carbon footprint - just to name a few. At Macy’s, we believe that contributing to a more sustainable environment is good business.

We’ve already installed more than 1.1 million LED bulbs in more than 800 Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores across America, cutting energy consumption used in lighting by up to 73 percent compared with conventional bulbs replaced. In 2014, LED technology is being extended to begin replacing fluorescent fixtures in store locations.

In 2012 we completed the installation of more than 800 LED accent lamps in Macy’s stores. We’re now in Phase Two of utilizing more energy efficient LED lighting. Piloted first at the Jersey City store, LEDs are now being used as the primary floor lighting in many renovations and new store projects, including the Macy’s store in Victorville, CA, the Macy’s Men’s Store in the Fashion Show Mall (Las Vegas, NV), the Gurnee Mills location (Gurnee, IL) and the Westfield South Shore mall location (Bay Shore, NY).

After reviewing and comparing dozens of different manufacturers of LED lighting over the course of a year, the current fixtures were selected because:

  • They produce optimal color rendering, energy savings and cost
  • They use 50 percent less energy than traditional fluorescent fixtures
  • The LED lamps have more than two times the life span of fluorescent lamps
  • The fixtures are shipped with factory-installed LED boards, eliminating the need for lamp installation and separate shipping

“It’s important to note that other benefits of LED lighting include higher vertical light level, more visually stimulating lighting and better color rendering. Macy’s is moving toward more and more LED lighting in stores in the future as the cost decreases and the benefits far outweigh fluorescent lighting,” said Dennis Vogel, Macy’s Senior Lighting Designer.

LED lighting fits perfectly in Macy’s 5-Point Action Plan for Sustainability. It saves money and energy, but more importantly it turns a previously bleak space into a well-lit, more enjoyable atmosphere. We’re seeing the light at Macy’s, and we like what we see.
