Volunteer and Conservation Efforts at the Peconic Land Trust

POSTED UNDER By Our Associates

The Peconic Land Trust on New York’s Long Island has a mission - to conserve Long Island’s working farms, natural land and heritage for future generations. The 10,000 acres include working farms, natural land and wildlife habitats, wetlands, watersheds, walking trails and gardens.

For the last several years, Macy’s associates from four New York stores - Manhasset, Smith Haven, Hampton Bays and Massapequa - have volunteered to work in the lush Bridge Gardens on the Land Trust’s property. Each year in April, about 20 Macy’s associates meet for an early morning breakfast at a store manager’s home and then make the two-hour drive to the Peconic. The rewarding work includes weeding, hoeing, pruning and mulching to keep the 800 varieties of roses and other garden plants healthy and grounds maintained. Maryann Cadmus, VP/Store Manager at Manhasset, admits the project also includes some good team-building. It’s become such a popular activity that associates must now draw names to be included in the annual project.

The work at Peconic Land Trust is a good example of Macy’s commitment to sustainability within the company and outside in our communities.

There may be an opportunity in your community to make a difference; in a park, on a beach, or perhaps creating a vegetable garden inside the city. Sustainability is about protecting and maintaining our environment and the earth around us. Bravo to the New York volunteers that made a difference at the Peconic Land Trust’s Bridge Gardens! Let Green Living know if you and your peers are working on a sustainability project outside of work for a future website story.
