Macy’s Associates Get Creative and Set a Green Example

POSTED UNDER By Our Associates

Every Macy’s, Inc. associate is challenged to think green, to do the right thing to be more sustainable, which in turn helps the company and the environment.

Distribution center associates in Joppa, MD, are setting a great example, taking sustainability seriously to reduce their carbon footprint. Their first project upgraded exterior lighting, reducing energy consumption by 58,000 kilowatt hours annually. Next, they upgraded the conveying system software to turn off unused sections, reducing another 280,000 kilowatt hours annually. They then converted an LED dock light, saving 8,000 kilowatt hours with an ROI of five days.

It doesn’t stop there — the recycle team of Tyesha Robinson, Carl Shuck, Donald Fender and Ed Hawkins recycled five tons of cardboard and five tons of plastic in one day last fall. A Styrofoam densifier was installed in November and already more than one-half ton of extruded polystyrene (EPS) was kept out of the landfill.

Joppa also partnered with its stores to reduce trash haul expense by recycling their plastic, cardboard, mixed paper, metal and unwanted fixtures. In 2012, 33.25 tons of metal, 3,763 tons of cardboard, 423 tons of plastic hangers, 350 tons of pallets, 436 tons of plastic and 3.75 tons of mixed paper for a total of 5,009 tons were recycled. Now that’s quite a haul!
