Macy’s Merchandising Group’s Second Annual Green Fest

POSTED UNDER By Our Associates

As longtime supporters of sustainability at Macy’s, associates in Macy’s Merchandising Group (MMG) in New York City continue to contribute new strategies such as reducing the size of shipping cartons, sustainable store fixturing, labels made from sustainable paper and much more.

Recently, more than 300 MMG associates celebrated their commitment and passion for sustainability with their second annual Green Fest. Local sustainability organizations set up stations in MMG offices and presented associates with their green ideas and recruited volunteers for various local projects.

Local organizations that participated in Green Fest:

  • Harlem Grown, an organization in Harlem that took an abandoned lot and turned it into a working farm to support the local community.
  • Grow NYC, representatives from the city’s local farmers markets, served associates an apple and kale salad.
  • Green NYC helped associates sign up to not receive any more junk mail.
  • Lower East Side Ecology Center gave demos on home composting.
  • NY Dept of Sanitation answered home recycling questions.
  • Great Forest, the building's sustainability and recycling consultant, answered work-related recycling questions.

Associates were  treated to sustainable crafts and giveaways. A craft station was set up for associates to make reusable items like coffee cup sleeves, wine bags and dog collars from salvaged and mutilated dress shirts, courtesy of the Men’s team. The balance of the salvaged dress shirts was donated to Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that brings comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need of handmade blankets.

Associates also had the opportunity to sample and take home local honey and apples. And the first 300 associates in attendance received a reusable hot/cold beverage tumbler.

Macy’s Merchandising Group isn’t just creating conversation about sustainability; they’ve made learning about it fun and interactive for associates. Here’s to the second annual Green Fest being one of many.
