Macy’s Credit and Customer Services Annual “Trashion” Show

POSTED UNDER By Our Associates

Fashion goes forward in a whole new way at the Macy’s Credit and Customer Services (MCCS) annual Earth Week “trashion” show, where passionate associates creatively repurpose paper, plastic, cardboard, metal and much more into one-of-a-kind works of wearable art.

What Is "Trashion?"

It's using trash for fashion! Newspaper, cardboard, mesh bags used to transport firewood, metal, rope, aluminum can tabs, tablecloths, plastic bottle caps, old gift cards and a lampshade are among the materials used in the creation of cocktail gowns, skirts, a men’s suit and even high-heeled shoes.

When contestants were asked why they selected the materials they did, many shared statistics about the environmental impact of throwing away those materials versus recycling them. One designer noted recycling one ton of newspaper saves an estimated 17 trees, 275 pounds of sulfur and more than 60,000 gallons of water. The Trashion Show designers who used rope for the bodice of their gown said it can take 14 months for rope to break down in a landfill – and it made a wonderful flexible material that enabled them to make the dress very fitted.

The team asked why recycling matters and got a wide range of responses, including “One man’s trash is another man’s couture!” and “The earth is our home, and we should respect it and treat is as we do our homes.”

The documentary closes with highlights from the show itself, including designers prepping backstage and the models walking the catwalk.
