Every Little Bit Helps: Recycling Champion Mindy Rulli

POSTED UNDER By Our Associates

It’s often said that the greatest heroes are not the ones found in storybooks and legends, but the everyday heroes who do the right thing day in and day out. HR Services Pension Analyst Mindy Rulli has become a champion both of Macy’s internal recycling program and recycling in the community as a whole. Her efforts to keep our environment as clean as possible while reducing her waste and carbon footprints make Mindy a recycling hero.

Mindy admits she hasn’t always been so focused on recycling. Instead, it was a gradual build: one that started with noticing both Macy’s sustainability initiatives as well as the well-developed recycling program in Wyoming, the Cincinnati community where she lives.

It wasn’t until she observed the recycling bins around the office and outside the cafeteria at Macy’s that she expanded her recycling from her home life to her work life. When it comes to starting recycling programs and getting involved, Mindy’s advice for her peers is simple: “Just do it. Take the lead and set an example in your department. Be an advocate. Make a difference.”

Mindy’s recycling efforts go far beyond the occasional water bottle or soda can. Wrapping from reams of paper, post-it notes and anything else that doesn’t have sensitive data on it makes its way to the recycle bin. If she can’t find a recycling bin, she’s been known to carry recyclables in her purse until she passes one. Macy’s effort to make it easy to recycle around the office is one of the things that Mindy says she likes most about her job.

As you may know by now, Macy’s efforts in sustainability encompass far more than just the recycling program. We have reduced the amount of paper products we use internally by nearly 10 percent in the last year alone, and now 99 percent of our marketing materials are made using recycled paper products, compared to just 63 percent in 2009.

For all these reasons and more, Mindy is truly a sustainability hero and recycling champion. After all, as she points out – every little bit helps.
