Tulsa Fulfillment Center Moves Macy’s Forward

POSTED UNDER Buildings

Macy’s has been strategically expanding and building fulfillment centers around the country as our innovative omnichannel business grows and expands. This allows for seamless brick-and-mortar, online and mobile shopping experiences. In fact, we were just named Mobile Retailer of the Year

Our fulfillment centers store and fulfill Internet orders for Macy’s. As we expand our business and stay at the forefront of the retail industry, we’re also staying conscious of the impact these expansions have on the environment. Our new fulfillment center in Tulsa, OK, is a great example of growing with sustainability in mind.

The Tulsa Fulfillment Center is a 1.3 million square foot facility with more than 52,000 lights – with a large portion consisting of LED lighting. For the first time, all LED lighting was installed in the stock storage areas in addition to the offices, restrooms, exterior building and parking lot.

Why is this important? This is the first notable development for Macy’s where most of the building utilizes LED lighting. This impressive milestone should be a sign of things to come for Macy’s future developments.

Along with extensive LED lighting, Tulsa is also equipped with more than 300 solatubes. Solatubes are cylinders lined with highly-reflective material that comes in various diameters and lengths to channel and disperse sunlight into a room. It has become a solution for lighting interiors in a cost-effective, energy-efficient and eco-friendly way because it significantly reduces the need for electricity.

Daylight from the solatubes also creates a better work environment for associates. Numerous studies have shown that worker productivity increases when exposed to daylight because they feel genuinely better and take less sick days.

With all of these sustainable building practices in place, the facility will be saving approximately 8 million kWh per year – enough energy to power 759 homes for a year! Projects like these show that Macy’s isn’t just innovative as a retail business; we’re also innovative as an environmentally conscious business.
