Macy’s Corporate Headquarters New Green Roof

POSTED UNDER Buildings

With beautiful spring weather in full effect, we thought it would be the perfect time to report on the patio renovation at Macy’s corporate headquarters, located in Cincinnati. Due for a renovation, we thought our urban roof space would make the perfect green project. The new Macy’s habitat green roof is located on the 8th floor patio right outside of the lunch room.

This green space now includes a 1000 sq ft “Go Green” garden where associates are able to plant vegetables and herbs that will literally go from farm to table – being used by the Macy’s dining room chef!

This space, designed by Green City Resources, includes plants that were strategically chosen as ideal material for butterflies and pollinators, as well as plants that adapt to seasonal progression.

Fun fact: Did you know that Ohio is on the Monarch migration route? Well, now you do! And it turns out this green roof is now a registered Monarch Waystation – as well as a wildlife habitat.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency claims green roofs can be used to address a range of issues. In addition to insulating buildings and reducing the amount of storm water lost through runoff, installing a lot of green roofs can actually mitigate urban heat island effect, the phenomenon by which a metropolis becomes significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to heat-absorbing infrastructure like asphalt and concrete.

This roof is the first of its kind in downtown Cincinnati, and we’re hoping to be a good influence for urban roofs around us – as well as prompting other major companies to consider doing the same.
