Sustainable Building Practices at Bloomingdale’s Outlet Stores Initiative

POSTED UNDER Buildings

Bloomingdale’s, America’s only nationwide, full-line upscale department store, has opened 13 outlet stores since 2011. All stores are in locations with an upscale focus occupying approximately 25,000 square feet.

Macy’s, Inc.’s SPACE (store planning, architecture, construction and engineering) department saw these stores as the perfect opportunity to use sustainable building materials to conserve energy, save water and reuse and repurpose materials.

As a result:

  • LED exterior and showcase lighting was installed in the stores to use less energy
  • Polished concrete floors made of natural materials with a recycled content eliminated the need for carpeting or tile
  • Water conservation began with on-demand water heaters putting hot water at the source, reducing the need to let water run while waiting for it to warm
  • Low flow fixtures in the restrooms are also used
  • Sustainable carpets with 24 percent recycled content and mats with 85 percent post-consumer recycled content are found at the front doors of the store
  • Metal fixtures for displaying merchandise contain a high recycled content
  • Ceilings without tiles are painted white to reflect natural light from outside, reducing the use of lighting to save energy

Integrating style into sustainability is seen in many facets of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s – we are department stores, after all - so that includes the style of our stores.
