Tips for Your Green Office Move

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

Moving offices isn’t something a business has to do very often. But when you’re a Fortune 500 omnichannel retailer with hundreds of stores across the country, moving one of many offices becomes something of a habit.

With the frequency of office moves top-of-mind, we thought it would be a good idea to provide tips on greening your office move, from decluttering to using data to reduce your carbon footprint.

Declutter, Donate, Swap

The simple act of decluttering your office space before moving will reduce the amount of energy (both man and machine power) to move offices. It will also reduce stress in the move.

One major pain point of moving offices is the furniture. More often than not, the furniture will be replaced, so what do you do with your current furniture? If you’re a major company like Macy’s, one option is to swap the furniture – it could go to another office or space in the company in need of furniture.

Office liquidators are also a green asset. They buy large quantities of furniture in good condition, working with you to determine a reasonable purchase price and inventory, giving the furniture new life.

And never underestimate the power of donations. Donate to nonprofits such as Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. Want to think more local? Look into schools or churches in your area that may have a use for office furniture.

Electronic Recycling

Second to office furniture, electronics are a major piece of overhead you either need to dispose of or move. But electronic waste is a significant concern, too – did you know more than 70 percent of electronic waste ends up in landfills?

You can’t just throw old electronics in the recycling bin, but recycling them is easier than you might think. Macy’s has an electronic waste recycling program in place to deal with this waste. Contact your facility manager for more information. Disposing of electronics from home? Do a simple search and find a recycling drop-off location near you.

New Office Procedures

New office – fresh start! Moving offices is the perfect transition to green the culture with sustainable practices. An added bonus is a potential morale boost, too. A couple of pointers to consider:

  • Get rid of paper cups and ask associates to bring in their own reusable cups – or give one to every member of the team!
  • Use only energy-efficient light bulbs – LEDs are usually the best option.
  • Purchase recycled paper.

Moving offices isn’t an everyday occurrence for most of us; but when it does happen, take the opportunity to make the move a sustainable one.
