Make Your Tailgate Sustainable

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

For most, Labor Day marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall – and more importantly to some – the beginning of football season. A quintessential tradition of football, from Pee Wee to the NFL, is tailgating. But sustainability doesn’t usually come to mind when throwing a portable pre-game party. Well, we’re here to tell you it IS possible to be sustainable and still have a supreme tailgating experience. Hey, it might even be more fun this way.

REDUCE

Carpool to the game! It’s a lot more fun to round up friends and family in one group – and not only does it save gasoline and emissions, but it also saves parking costs and hassles, too. Another smart way to reduce is bringing food and drinks to share, instead of relying on prepackaged single-serving foods. Sharing is caring, not to mention it saves everyone time and money while reducing the trash sent to the landfill. Being communal goes a long way – and it usually creates more memories.

REUSE

Instead of bringing disposable tableware to the game, bring outdoor-friendly reusable tableware, with cloth tablecloths and napkins that can be reused. Take them back home to wash and they’re good to use for next week’s game. Not to mention that quality, reusable tableware goes a long way compared to the standard throwaway option (no more trying to cut that thick steak on a flimsy paper plate with a dull plastic knife). This option lets you go for nice aesthetics as well – show your team spirit and buy reusable supplies in your team’s colors.

RECYCLE

Separate your recyclables – especially cans and bottles – as you tailgate. Many schools and stadiums now offer gameday recycling in popular tailgate areas and provide convenient bags and bins for your recyclables. The potential environmental benefit is huge, and universities are really getting into it. Check out if your alma mater is a part of the Gameday Recycling Challenge, a friendly competition for colleges and universities to promote waste reduction at their football games. If your school or stadium doesn’t offer a gameday recycling program, ask for one! In the meantime, simply bring your recyclables home to place in your own recycling bin.

Tailgating for gameday is all fun and games until sustainability becomes a factor – then it’s even more fun and games. Do your part to green your pre-game. We bet you’ll come out of it with a better tailgate experience. Game time!
