Getting Inspired by America Recycles Day

POSTED UNDER Recycling & Waste Reduction

“One day to educate. One day to motivate. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.” Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day. A program of Keep America Beautiful, it’s a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Everyone knows what recycling is, but many of us still lack the action and awareness to make the biggest impact and the smallest footprint we can on our environment.

Here are a few startling facts on recycling, courtesy of Recyclebank:

  • More than 75 percent of waste is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30 percent of it.
  • The average person generates more than four pounds of waste per day.
  • It takes the same amount of energy to make one new can as it does to make 20 recycled cans.
  • Used plastic dumped into the sea kills and destroys sea life at an estimated 1 million sea creatures per year.
  • Most recyclables take longer than several human life spans to decompose if not recycled – an aluminum can takes 80 years, a glass bottle takes 500 years, a plastic bottle takes 700 years and Styrofoam NEVER decomposes.

Now that we’ve gone through this recycling reality check, here are a few easy tips to become a master recycler:

  • First, know your limits. Putting materials in your recycling that aren’t collected in your community contaminates the recycling process and creates extra work for recycling facility employees. If you’re unsure of what to recycle, check out this recycling guide.
  • Close the loop. After you’ve recycled materials, look for products and packaging with recycled content when replacing the recycled materials. Do your part as a recycling-conscious consumer.
  • Reduce and reuse. Minimizing the trash you generate and reusing products reduces your impact on the planet. For example, consider reusing that plastic bag. And reduce unwanted waste like junk mail by unsubscribing at catalogchoice.org.
  • Spread the word. Share your newfound wealth of knowledge. You’ll find recycling allies you never knew you had – and you might even inspire those previously indifferent to recycling.

The main purpose of America Recycles Day is to provide the right push to change behaviors and habits. Recycling is a critical component of a sustainable lifestyle. And that’s what it is – a lifestyle. It must become a part of your daily practice to stick. It’s a conscious commitment, not just one day out of the year, but every day.
