Natural Ways to Battle Cold and Flu Season

POSTED UNDER Healthy Living

As another harsh winter overstays its welcome, so does the dreaded cold and flu season that comes with it. Aside from over-the-counter remedies, there are a lot of natural ways to both effectively boost your immune system and fight off illness if you do get sick.

Liquids
To stay healthy … drink a lot of water. The human body is made up of roughly 55 percent to 70 percent water, so staying hydrated is a huge step in boosting the immune system. It’s recommended to drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day.

If you are sick … drink plenty of liquids to flush your system. Keep hydrated with water, but also take in warm liquids like tea or broth to boost your energy and soothe your throat and stomach.

Foods
To stay healthy … eat foods that are rich in protein and have healthy fats. And don’t forget to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Buy organic if you can to avoid pesticides. Finally, avoid eating foods high in sugars; they depress your immune system.

If you are sick … eat spicy foods – specifically hot peppers! There are compounds in hot peppers that act as a natural decongestant. They’re also full of vitamin C.

Sleep
To stay healthy … try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. If you’re not running on enough energy for the day, neither is your immune system.

If you are sick … most definitely get at least eight hours of sleep. Resting and recharging is imperative to getting better.

Fitness
To stay healthy … exercise regularly. Keeping a routine workout keeps the body strong and reduces stress levels. It also aids in fighting off bacteria and viruses.

If you are sick … do not exercise. Rest. Hard workouts strain your central nervous system when you’re sick. Take the break you need from working out until you feel better. However, stretching when you’re sick helps increase blood flow and boosts the immune system.

Relax
To stay healthy … eliminate stress. Mental stress negatively impacts physical health. Stress is unavoidable and affects everyone, but you also have the power to minimize stress in certain areas of your life. You have control over certain stressors, like being overworked, negative relationships, or even something as simple as your general outlook. Minimizing stress boosts your immunity.

If you are sick … relax. The same stress that affects your daily life is heightened when you’re sick. It’s important to unwind every day when you’re healthy, but it becomes critical to unwind when you’re sick.

Many of these things are well-known remedies, but so many of us rarely think about the reasoning behind them. Drugstore solutions can only go so far – listening and naturally tending to your body is the best medicine.
