Experience a Whole New World with National Get Outdoors Day

POSTED UNDER Healthy Living

Watching a baseball game. Going kayaking on the lake. Having a cookout. Digging in the garden. Taking a walk. Or simply sitting on the lawn relaxing and enjoying the sunshine.  These are ways we enjoy the world around us during the warmer months.

Now that Memorial Day (the unofficial start of summer) is past, we know you’re spending more time outside based on the overwhelming response to our Earth Week Plant Your Pictures contest! Now there’s a whole new reason to get outside – Saturday, June 11 is the ninth annual National Get Outdoors Day – a day focused on encouraging healthy, active outdoor activities.

Sponsored by a partnership between The U.S. Forest Service and The American Recreation Coalition, it’s packed with events at state and national parks across the country, with opportunities to experience everything from fishing and camping to getting photos taken with Smokey the Bear. (For a location near you, visit the National Get Outdoors Day locations page.)

As our society has become more urban and children have more structured schedules and less free time – and free time they do have often involves a screen of some type – children are spending less and less time outdoors.

That has health professionals concerned not only for the lack of exercise, but also because independent play outside provides children an opportunity to let their imaginations run wild and to develop social skills they can’t learn from a TV or computer screen. National Get Outdoors Day was created in 2009 to counteract these trends and provide opportunities to experience our parks and recreation areas in new ways.

So find an event near you, or just make outdoor plans of your own – and celebrate all the great outdoors has to offer.
