Eat Local This Fourth of July

POSTED UNDER Healthy Living

Celebrating America’s birthday usually centers around enjoying the outdoors, friends, family, fireworks and a nice grill out. Since it’s a time to celebrate our nation and enjoy our environment, why not make it sustainable and eat local?

First and foremost, shopping at local farmers markets is as American as apple pie. You’re supporting local, American business. And local farmers are normally much more earth conscious and hardworking than industrialized farms. When you buy local, far less production and transportation is required for meat and produce. Therefore, you’re also reducing the carbon footprint.

Now to the part that really benefits you. The win-win about local food is that most of the time it’s much fresher and flavor filled than the same food you’d buy elsewhere. It makes for a better meal and peace of mind. Also remember that local food often means organic food. That means no pesticides, processed materials or added ingredients. Not to mention, it can be a much more enjoyable and informative experience to stroll through a market and speak to the farmers that grew your food.

So when you’re celebrating this Independence Day, remember to eat local if you can. Your country, your community, your guests and your stomach will thank you for it!
