Educate, Appreciate and Celebrate World Oceans Day

POSTED UNDER Energy & Conservation

Each year on June 8, the largest celebration of our oceans takes place: World Oceans Day. Numerous events, contests, projects, classes, and even concerts are held across the globe. This day was first proposed in 1992 and was officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 2008. According to the UN, “Our oceans, our future” is this year’s theme and is connected to the Ocean Conference taking place in New York this week.

Why Celebrate Oceans?

Our oceans provide us with so many benefits. On June 8, celebrate the bodies of water that:

  • Regulate our climate
  • Clean our drinking water
  • Produce most of the oxygen we breathe
  • Serve as homes to hundreds of thousands of species
  • Give us food – it’s the world’s largest source of protein
  • Provide ingredients for medicine
  • Act as sources of energy
  • Create jobs and methods of transportation
  • Share their immense beauty

This day of global observance also shines a light on what threatens this precious resource. Pollution, overfishing and the destruction of animal habitats are some of the largest issues for our oceans today.

What Can You Do?

  • Get Curious: Learn all you can about our oceans and the marine life that live in them. Discover how our everyday activities can have an impact – good or bad.
  • Share Your Knowledge: Tell your friends and family what you’ve learned. Plan an event, create a social media post or start a discussion. Get everyone on board to make a difference and learn from each other.
  • Eat Sustainable Seafood: When shopping for seafood, look for terms, such as sustainably caught, sustainably harvested, or diver caught. Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch is a great source for more information about making sustainable seafood choices.
  • Be a Smart Consumer: Know and support eco-friendly and sustainable products and brands, especially those that reuse plastics. Learn about the Macy’s vendors that turn harmful beach plastics into recycled fashion.
  • Clean Up: Like Macy’s Hawaii associates did on Earth Day, organize a beach cleanup event, or dedicate an hour of your vacation to clean up litter on your own. Be a part of protecting our oceans for future generations to enjoy.
  • Celebrate: Take time to think about how our oceans impact you. Then, check out the various events and activities happening around the world on the official World Oceans Day website. Join in, and appreciate all that our oceans have to offer!

How will you celebrate World Oceans Day? Tell us what the ocean means to you.
