Sustainability the Real Champion of Super Bowl 50

POSTED UNDER Energy & Conservation

While the Broncos were the victor this past Super Bowl Sunday, it turns out San Francisco’s Levi’s Stadium took the gold … LEED Gold certification, that is. The 49ers new stadium opened in 2014 to great acclaim for its technology – most notably its green initiatives.

1,150 solar panels produce enough energy for every home game for an entire season!

Aside from that great achievement, the stadium also:

  • Uses 85 percent reclaimed water for flush fixtures and landscape irrigation
  • Used local, reclaimed wood for interior renovations
  • Has a green roof with drought tolerant plants

And it doesn’t stop there! Environmental consciousness is in the stadium’s operations as well:

  • 64 percent of all consumer waste is recycled
  • 87 percent of durable goods in the stadium are also recycled

It’s no surprise that San Francisco’s stadium would be so sustainable – the city is one of the most forward thinking when it comes to environmental consciousness. In fact, our macys.com offices in San Francisco also achieved LEED Gold certification!

We commend Levi’s Stadium and the San Francisco 49ers, not only for hosting an incredible Super Bowl, but for celebrating America’s sport with the environment in mind.
