Electric Vehicle Charging Expansion Makes Shopping Trips Sustainable

POSTED UNDER Partnerships & Awards

The sustainable benefits of electric vehicles (EV) are obvious; they’re better for the environment than conventional, gasoline-powered cars because they’re more energy efficient and produce less greenhouse gas emissions. From a selfish standpoint, the money saved from skipping on gas stations is a sweet reward. But the availability of vehicle charging stations is less than ideal.

Macy’s continued to expand its sustainability initiatives in 2011 by becoming the first major department store to pilot the use of EV charging stations. Sixteen charging stations were installed outside five Macy's stores and one Bloomingdale's store in the San Diego area, currently being operated as part of the Blink Network.

By providing the use of these EV charging stations:

  • Customers reduce 13,812 pounds of CO2 emissions;
    • which equates to 58 barrels of oil
    • or more than 2,424 gallons of gas

We’re now very excited to announce our EV charging station expansion! In collaboration with Volta Industries, plans are in place to install 17 new free-to-operate EV charging stations outside eight Macy's stores in the Los Angeles area by late fall.

Our stations are placed in highly visible locations near store entries/exits using both standard and accessible parking stall locations. Charging your car while you’re shopping is really more of a convenience, like “topping off” since you’re on a shorter trip compared to your time at work or home.

Have we been successful in offering a service to our customers with electric vehicles? Nearly 30 percent of the usage has come from repeat customers, which is very encouraging. And we only expect these numbers to grow as we expand our stations. We’re proud of putting effort into finding convenient sustainable outlets, both figuratively and literally, for our customers.
