Energy Efficiency Leads to Northeast Business Leader Award for Macy’s

POSTED UNDER Partnerships & Awards

Macy’s has created many historical firsts in retailing and continues that trend to this day through sustainability. The rollout of state-of-the-art LED technology for accent lighting in New York, supported by an incentive from New York’s State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through the Existing Facilities Program, led to Macy’s being recognized as the 2012 Northeast Business Leader Award for Energy Efficiency.

Macy’s completed an innovative LED lighting efficiency upgrade at 17 of its facilities throughout the New York City, Lower Hudson Valley and Upstate regions of New York State. Energy efficiency measures also include HVAC and other operational equipment. The overall project within Macy’s corporate structure has resulted in more than 1,000,000 traditional incandescent/halogen bulbs being replaced in over 800 Macy’s stores.

The new LEDs work longer and reduce energy consumption by nearly 73 percent. The custom designed, 12 watt LED lamps replaced 47 watt halogen lighting and will last more than a decade. Working with NYSERDA, Energy Conservation & Supply, Inc. and MSi Solid State Lighting, Macy’s was able to customize the new bulbs to utilize existing sockets.

“Macy’s dropped display costs by nearly 73 percent per year in New York. Now we’re taking the program nationwide and NYSERDA made it possible,” said Bill Lyon, VP/Energy Management. The new LED lighting produces little heat and uses less power, giving Macy’s a better quality of light to showcase merchandise, which is always a priority.

Being considered a leader in energy efficiency only fuels the fire of our sustainability trailblazing. Further details about the Northeast Business Leaders for Energy Efficiency Program can be found here: neep.org/neep-summit/Business-Recognition.
