Macy’s Joins the Ranks of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition

POSTED UNDER Partnerships & Awards

When you think about it, the fashion industry actually has a major impact on environmental, social, and governing issues. Unfortunately, high amounts of energy, chemicals, and resources are used to manufacture clothing. And the industry’s weaving supply chain can be more intricate than the clothes themselves, leaving room for oversight and, consequently, exploitation. But Macy’s is working to resolve these industry issues.

Macy's Merchandising Group has taken a giant sustainable and socially responsible leap forward by joining the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). Initially formed in an odd-couple relationship by retailers Walmart and Patagonia, this coalition includes retailers, manufacturers, fashion houses, nonprofits, academic experts and the EPA - representing more than a third of the global apparel and footwear market. SAC works to reduce the environmental and social impacts of the clothing industry around the world.

The Coalition serves a range of purposes to improve the industry:

  •  Soften the apparel industry's impact on and industry consumption, making commitments to reduce waste and chemical use
  • Work with industry peers and supply chain partners to achieve the fullest possible life cycle transparency for clothing
  • Ensure that workplaces throughout the apparel industry adopt fair employment practices and a safe working environment, while reducing exposure to toxic chemicals

How are these goals achieved? By using the the Higg Index – an industry-wide supply-chain index that measures water and energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, social labor practices and more.

Macy’s and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition want to gauge where the industry is – and where it can be improved. All of the knowledge gathered is shared with the public. There’s no ego in this mission. Huge competitors are teaming together to make a change. It’s inspiring, and Macy’s Merchandising Group is thrilled to be involved.
