Our Next Steps

We’re constantly looking ahead to reach the greenest living possible. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we’re not stopping there. Here’s what we’re doing next:

Reducing Energy Consumption

We plan to continue reducing our energy use by another 2 percent in 2016, 2017, and 2018 (compared with 2015 levels), recognizing that we’ve already reduced our energy consumption by about 35 percent over the past 12 years.

Host More Renewable Energy Sources

Solar power is king in this category. In 2012, we set a goal for our company to increase the number of solar installations by about 35 percent. At that time, we had 44 active installations.

Today? We have 78 active installations – and plan to increase the total number to 113 by the end of 2016 for a total increase of 157 percent! According to the Environmental Protection Agency, that’s the equivalent of 4 million gallons of gasoline, or enough to power more than 15,000 electric vehicles for 30 years.

Keep More Waste Out of Landfills

We’re working to increase the amount of our waste diverted from landfills to 70 percent by 2018 (up from more than 60 percent in 2015).

Keep Paper Usage Sustainable

We’re maintaining the percentage of recycled (10 percent PCW or higher) and/or third party-certified paper we use in marketing materials at the 99 percent level, compared with 63 percent in 2009.  We reached our 2015 goal of 95 percent a year earlier than expected, and have since increased to 99 percent.

Improve Sustainable Building Processes

Sustainability is now built into all Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s store design, remodel, and construction projects. By 2018, we plan to increase the company’s waste diversion from construction by 15 percent over 2016 levels in major capital projects.

Our goals are ambitious, and based on our sustainability track record, we see these goals as realistic expectations – and we’re definitely up for the challenge.
