Quizzing Our Corporate Social Responsibility

From the start, Macy’s sustainability initiatives are developed with our 5-Point Action Plan, laid out in our Corporate Social Responsibility Report, in mind. During Earth Week, we want to reflect on our plan and see what strides we’ve made in order to stick to it. Now it’s time to test your knowledge of our progress.

Point 1: We will be aggressive in our drive to eliminate wasteful behavior.

Fact or Myth: We’ve taken steps to remove waste and save fuel in our logistics, resulting in 47 million sustainable miles (miles traveled with intermodal rail containers, which contribute less than 50 percent the amount of carbon dioxide per freight mile than trucks) traveled in 2015.

Fact or Myth: 50 percent of paper used by Macy’s in marketing materials is certified or recycled.

Myth. Actually, 97 percent of paper used by Macy’s in marketing materials is either certified or recycled.

Point 2: Whenever possible and sensible within the context of our business requirements, Macy’s, Inc. will pursue the most environmentally-friendly solution.

Fact or Myth: The fuel cell located at the Macy’s Cheshire, CT, Distribution Center generated 422,8864 kilowatts per hour in the past month.

Answer

Fact or Myth: Macy’s has installed more than 1 million LED accent lamps.

Answer

Fact! More than a million! As part of the Better Buildings Challenge, we’ve installed more than 1,100,000 lamps or a reduction of more than 36,300,000 watts.

Point 3: We will reduce our use of scarce resources in a meaningful way.

Fact or Myth: By the end of 2015, we had 68 active solar installations

Answer

Myth. The actual answer is 78. By the end of 2016 we plan to have more than 100!

Fact or Myth: Among the Top 25 companies utilizing solar energy, Macy’s ranks No. 6.

Fact! Macy’s ranked above companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Staples, Campbell’s Soup and FedEx.

Point 4: We will take a comprehensive approach to sustainability, involving everyone around us.

Fact or Myth: Macy’s Logistics and Operations is the function of Macy’s that’s a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), a trade organization working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products around the world.

Answer

Myth. It’s actually Private Brands – our company’s product development organization.

Point 5: We will measure what we do and strive toward quantifiable goals.

Fact or Myth: Overall, we’ve reduced total energy consumption by 15 percent in the last 10 years.

Answer

Myth: It’s actually double that – 32 percent. In a decade, we’ve reduced energy consumption by a third.
